Birdhouse Project Tilton School October 20th, 2017
On October 20th the Tattersall Farm became a living classroom for a group of fourth-graders from the Tilton Elementary School. Members of the Mass Audubon Society gave students lessons on how to identify birds and what birds eat. The children also played a bird migration game and learned that for migrating birds, the journey can be treacherous.
To improve the conservation efforts and to fulfill the wishes of the Tattersall Sisters who were teachers, the board of trustees created a program to work with Tilton Elementary School. 30 Birdhouses were built by volunteers and delivered to Tilton School for the students to paint. The students studied about birding in their class room. The classroom was then brought to the farm where the students delivered their painted birdhouses.
Students rotated between 3 stations.
Finally to complete the learning experience the students will be invited back in the spring 2018 to see if any birds that have built nest in the house they decorated.

- Birding with Binoculars: Intro to Birds, how can you tell one bird from another, how do you ID a bird, and use the binoculars to find birds residing on the farm.
- Food for Birds Walk: Discussion on the birds that are migrating, the food they feed on, how do birds find what they need to eat in the woods/fields, and how birds digest food differently than humans.
- Great Migration Game: Students learned about migration routes of songbirds, why they go south for the winter and return north in the spring, students then participated in a roleplaying game where they learned the hazards that birds face.
Finally to complete the learning experience the students will be invited back in the spring 2018 to see if any birds that have built nest in the house they decorated.
